OPRAH'S beauty director, Valerie Monroe, gets to the bottom line on applying foundation.

Dear Val:

Recently, I've been hearing a lot about mineral makeup. What exactly is it, and is it better for my skin?

Response:
You have to get up pretty early in the morning to put one over on Val; skeptic that I am, I was sure the claim that mineral makeup is good for your skin was a lot of hooey. So I asked James Hammer, director of research and development at Shuster Laboratories, an independent consumer products testing firm, to confirm that all the hype was, as I suspected, simply another way to get you to buy beauty products. "Hi Val," his e-mail began cheerily enough, and then went on to explain why I was completely wrong. Mineral makeup, he informed me, is formulated with mixtures of very fine, micronized mineral powders. Though traditional makeup is generally made with similar mineral pigments, it may also contain dyes, oils, and fragrances. Mineral makeup is free of those and other ingredients that could be irritating to the skin. In many cases, says Hammer, it doesn't require preservatives. And here's an added bonus-important during the long, sunny days of summer: Most also use a tinted base of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which offer some UV protection.

Bottom line:
Mineral makeup won't clog pores, is less likely to promote allergic reactions, and is typically good for people with sensitive skin.
